Building Greener Across Generations – Intergenerational Conversation on Climate Crisis
In December 2021 the Working Group on Girls in collaboration with UN Women hosted a live virtual Global Girls Conversation Circle for girls led by girls with girls from our member organizations. Simultaneously, WGG also invited girls and organizations working around the globe to host local Girls Conversation Circles to ensure that the voices of girls unable to attend the live virtual event were included. The girls discussed their perspective on Climate Change and the effects on their lives. They know the changes that are needed and how they can contribute both as leaders and change-makers.
In the lead-up to CSW, we asked girls the topics they would like to discuss further and with whom. The topics that were mentioned correlated to the Generation Equality Forum (GEF) Action Coalition Themes, particularly on feminist leadership and climate justice. The majority of the respondents also preferred an intergenerational dialogue to allow for deep listening and collaborative action. There was an awareness among the girls of the importance of girls and women who are directly experiencing the effects of climate change to be present at the event.
In response, the Working Group on Girls (WGG), working in collaboration with NGO CSW, will host a live virtual Global Girl-led intergenerational Conversation Circle on March 21 from 9 -10:30 am, with girls, young adults, and women from our member organizations participating.
These girl-led Conversation Circles will bring girls and women together to have a productive dialogue about the following GEF Action Coalition Themes in the context of climate change and environmental disaster risk reduction, their impact on girls’ lives, identify areas for policy development and risk reduction, and to develop methods for collaborative advocacy within their communities and globally. In addition to advocacy, we hope to provide space for intergenerational mentorship.
